Značka Cannondale byla založena v roce 1971 ve státě Connecticut v USA, ale cyklistikou se značka začala zaobírat až později. Prvním produktem z cyklistické oblasti byl Bugger – tažný přívěs pro děti za kolo. Své první kolo firma Cannondale představila v roce 1983 a ihned tím vzbudila velký ohlas. Byl představen model s hliníkovým rámem, címž firma Cannondale ostartovala éru používání hliníku na výrobu rámů. Své první celoodpružené kolo představila firma už v roce 1991 a následující rok pak přichází na svět legendární HeadShok – odpružení integrované v hlavové trubce.
